Emmi to build new cheese dairy in Emmen

Emmen LU – Emmi is starting construction of its new cheese dairy in Emmen this November. This will create additional capacities for further growth in cheese production. The company is investing 50 million Swiss francs. The new cheese dairy will be ready for operation at the end of 2022.

In the last ten years, the milk processed into cheese by Emmi at the Emmen site has doubled. The existing cheese dairy will have reached its capacity limit in 2023. The building constructed in 1976 is in need of extensive renovations and the cheese dairy facility has reached the end of its life cycle.

It was reported in a press release that the company therefore decided to construct a new building next to the existing one. The new facilities enable the optimal flow of production, storage and distribution, while also allowing cheese production to become more resource-conserving. The existing cheese dairy can continue to operate during the construction work. Emmi is investing 50 million francs in the new building.

Emmi received the go-ahead for its construction project at the beginning of November, so construction is due to start in the middle of November. Work on the building is expected to be completed at the end of 2021, with commissioning scheduled for the end of 2022.

Emmi is demonstrating its commitment to Central Switzerland. “A large, modern, resource-conserving cheese dairy with short transport routes to our milk suppliers is the perfect complement to our specialty cheeses from commercial cheese dairies,” says Marc Heim in the press release. The deputy CEO of Emmi is Executive Vice President of the Switzerland Division and therefore responsible for the investment decision.
