Lucerne gets a new quarter

A new quarter is being built on the current ewl campus in Lucerne for around 200 million Swiss francs. The project comprises three buildings with office space, apartments and a care center, and is being realized by construction companies Halter and Eberli.

The City of Lucerne, the allgemeine baugenossenschaft luzern (abl) and energie wasser luzern (ewl) are planning to realize a “mixed, sustainable and ecological flagship quarter for living, work and leisure”. The project is being realized by Team ARGE Halter AG/Eberli Sarnen AG, according to the jury’s decision following tender.
On the approximately 20,000-square meter site there will be three new buildings with offices, apartments and assisted living spaces. Set to move into the offices are ewl, the Feuerwehr Stadt Luzern, the civil defence organization Pilatus, the Stadtgärtnerei and support bases for road supervisors. The assisted living spaces will be used by Viva Luzern AG’s care center, and with the apartments will ensure there is “living space for different needs and lifestyles in a lively quarter”.

ewl areal ag expects to receive planning permission by 2021, with the apartments, assisted living spaces and offices ready for occupation by 2026. The investment is reported to be around 200 million Swiss francs excluding leaseholder improvements. A referendum will be held in 2021 to determine the city’s contribution to the financing.
