Broad education for a broad horizon
Lucerne is home to an extensive education system, which spans from pre-schools to international schools right up to university studies. Technical schools, Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, the University of Lucerne and many other continuing education institutes offer programs in almost any discipline.
In the multi-lingual and federalist structure of Switzerland, the cantons assume the primary responsibility for the education system. The cantons and their municipalities finance 90% of the education expenditures from public funds.
The Canton of Lucerne administers long-track high schools, short-track high schools, special programs within the short-track high schools for the athletically and musically gifted, a matura school for adults and a one-year “bridge” classes that make it possible to receive a university education after earning a vocational matura certificate. Furthermore, there are courses available at the specialized middle schools (music and pedagogical focus) as well as the middle school for economic studies.
The Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts is a specialized school for six central-Swiss cantons and unifies the Departments of Engineering & Architecture, Business, Information Technology, Social Work, Design & Art as well as Music.
